Aquaculture New Zealand, Marine Farming Association and Nelson Regional Development Agency organised a fantastic day for Nelson Tasman high schools this week. The aquaculture careers day highlighted the diverse roles within the industry. Thanks Moana, MacLab, Cawthron Institute and NMIT.
The students had a great experience starting at Moana, where they were introduced to the Oyster Hatchery and Nursery, along with algae feed. Then, Maclab explained their business model and the nutraceutical product from their mussel farms. It was so interesting to see how mussel powder is made for health products.
At Cawthron, with the Blue Tech team students got an inside look at the tech used in Aquaculture for Research and Development, including diving. The final stop was NMIT, where students heard about study options and were even shown how sick fish are diagnosed (who knew they were anaesthetised).
What an informative, inspiring and enjoyable day!
