A group of 18 students from Nelson Tasman high schools came along today for the IT and Computing Careers day.
First up was Datacom, where Allan outlined the wide variety of roles available in the IT industry and students also learnt about the extensive world of work in Datacom. He highlighted the new virtual online work exploration programmes and during morning tea various Datacom staff spoke about their roles and journey to get to where there are now. Students also got to have some fun drawing against Artificial Intelligence.
Next stop was the fast growing Snap Information Technologies where students got to chat with Chris about anything and everything – quantum, climate change, AI, conflict, tools, problem solving, VR, AR, design, entrepreneurial enterprise and more. Students met other staff members and chatted to them about what they were working on and watched some PCB soldering work. Two of the students got to assist with some 3D laser cutting.
Then it was on to Carbon Crop to hear about the fascinating and innovative work the team are involved in – AI based mapping and measurement which helps the balance between forest and agriculture and effectively reduces climate change.
After some lunch at NMIT, tutors spoke about the study options available, the jobs available in the region and beyond, the strong IT business network in Nelson and the pastoral care available at NMIT. Students were keen to sign up for the upcoming Taster Days and excited to hear about a new Trades Academy class in Gamification.
Then, Blueberry IT brought along two recent NMIT graduates that were already succeeding in the world of IT. They were able to talk about the great connections they had made in the industry while still studying and how these helped them get great local jobs. They had tonnes of good advice including how to balance study and work. They had both made great friends while studying and now felt ready to work anywhere in the world with IT.
