Jade chased her dream of being a hairdresser since leaving school. With hard work, passion and dedication, Jade is now a proud co-owner of a busy, vibrant hair salon in the heart of Nelson city, Cardells. Jade works alongside a team of four talented hairdresser’s and describes the salon as being inviting and fun.
While Jade always knew she wanted to be in the hairdressing industry, in her last year of high school decided to make the most of the Gateway programme offered through Waimea College and get a real feel for hairdressing. She then went on to complete work experience in local salons to then be offered an apprenticeship and work her way up in the salon she currently co-owns.
The hairdressing industry is an exciting and fulfilling area to work in, with Jade stating the client interactions and variation of the job being her favourite part. Hairdressing has many avenues that can be explored – competitions, bridal hair, and up do’s, colour consultant or technician and upskilling in new trends and products.
“Offer to help in a local salon, show that you are keen and willing to learn and get stuck in.”
While Jade wears many hats, a normal day consists of fulfilling client appointments which can vary from a cut and colour to a full head of foils, wash, and style. Responding to emails and phone calls, fulfilling tax and GST requirements, ordering stock, paying wages, and looking after her staff.
Nelson has always been home for Jade, and she enjoys the lifestyle and relaxing environment that Nelson provides. Jade likes exploring the beautiful beaches with her husband and dog, Bella. She also loves the great food and wine around Nelson and can sometimes be found eating a delicious meal on Hardy Street or sipping on wine at Forster’s winery. Since the salon is so busy, Jade finds it important to take time to unwind and make the most of Nelson’s great climate.
Jade shared some great advice to those wanting to start out in the industry, “offer to help in a local salon, show that you are keen and willing to learn and get stuck in”. She says:
“While it is a job that requires hard work, it is extremely rewarding – passion drives it.”
