NRDA and NMIT organised a career and study exploration afternoon around Conservation for Nelson Tasman High School students.
Students joined NMIT’s Conservation team on site at Richmond campus despite the horrendous rain to meet Geoff and Fay, NMIT Kaitiaki Whenua – Trainee Ranger tutors.
Greeted on site with hot dogs and brownies while given an insight into the roles in conservation.
During a moment of sunshine, the team took the students to Eves Valley where NMIT’s Trainee Ranger students work alongside DOC to maintain this beautiful space for all to enjoy.
Geoff informed the group about predator trapping and native plants as well as the how-to using GPS trackers, recording a trek and how it can be used for monitoring within the Trainee Ranger role.
The tour generated good discussions and students learnt what preparation is needed before applying for the ranger course, such as Outdoor First Aid and a full driving licence.
There was great feedback about the day from both students and teachers.
