Maritime / Port Careers Day – 19 March 2025

Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA), in collaboration with Guard Safety Port Nelson and NMIT, hosted a Maritime Careers Day that gave local high school students the opportunity to explore a range of career pathways within the maritime industry, including Port Nelson, fishing, aquaculture, and more.

The day started with an exciting morning aboard The Gleam and Nelson Ferry, where students experienced the stunning Nelson coastline and learned about the area’s rich maritime history. They also enjoyed interactive activities on Haulashore Island, including lifejacket-tying races and fish species identification. From the water, they had the chance to observe Talley’s, Port Nelson, Sealord, and Plant and Food Research facilities up close.

Following the ferry trip, students toured Port Nelson and spent time in the training room with Jacqui, who shared valuable insights into careers and pathways for roles at Port Nelson.

The day concluded with a visit to NMIT, where students explored the world-class bridge simulator and discovered the study options available for maritime careers.

The Maritime Careers Day provided students with an inspiring and informative experience, showcasing the diverse and exciting career opportunities available within the maritime sector.
